Citi ThankYou 5x Bonus Categories Q2 2014

I believe this is a targeted promo that Citi is doing for ThankYou point earning credit cards.  I don’t usually use my Citi TY Preferred card as I can usually earn more points using my other credit cards.  Citi seems to have quarterly bonus categories that earn 5 points per dollar spent as this isn’t the first time I have received such a letter – albeit for categories where I spend very little, if any at all.  This is very similar to the Chase Freedom 5x earning quarterly categories, but those categories are usually somewhat useful to me.

The offer I got for this quarter is on groceries, gas, drugstores, and other commuter transportation expenses (huh?), through June 31, 2014.  I tend to spend quite a bit on gas and the Freedom 5x bonus on gas ended at the end of March so this offer caught my eye.

Citi 5x Bonus Categories

Personally, the best way for me to take advantage of this offer is to buy gas cards or other gift cards at my local grocery store.  By doing so, I’ll earn a discount on gas to the tune of 10 cents per gallon for every $100 spend at the grocery store.  A big thing about this is that gas/gift cards earn 2x on that, so I really only need to spend $50 to get 10 cents per gallon off.  I’ll probably stick to gas cards as I tend to fill up my car regularly.

As you can see from the offer letter, it is limited to 2,500 additional points…at a rate of 4x additional points per dollar, that is $625.  That is significantly lower than the Chase Freedom limit which is $1500.

Did you get the same letter or are your bonus categories different?
