Hyatt Place LAX/El Segundo Review

I would like to say that I try to have realistic expectations whenever I stay at a hotel, especially one at which I have never stayed before. Though I know I tend to hold some hotel chains to a higher standard than others (Hyatt vs IHG, which own Holiday Inns). That being said, I know I wouldn’t get the same experience at a Hampton Inn as I would at a Hilton, for example. As such, I know that my experience at a Hyatt Place would not be quite as nice and memorable as staying at a Hyatt Regency. I didn’t think that it would be a huge difference, especially at a new hotel like the Hyatt Place El Segundo. Boy, was I wrong!

First, let me share with you the hotel’s abridged amenity list and several other pertinent facts. This Hyatt Place opened not even 6 months ago, in December 2012. It was slated to open in May 2013, but I guess construction finished early. It has a fitness center, outdoor pool, free parking (which is great since it is so close to LAX), free WiFi, and free breakfast.

I recently stayed at the Hyatt Place El Segundo after doing some planespotting at Imperial Hill, just south of LAX. The lobby area is quite nice with a water wall and accented lighting. At check in, I was asked if it was my first stay at the Hyatt Place and if I would like a quick tour. It was a nice touch, but was quick and wasn’t much more than what I could have figured out myself if I walked around for a minute or two.

The Room
The rooms have a modern feel to them. It has a very comfortable look to it. There’s a desk with cordless phone, a good sized sectional sofa with an ottoman, a 42-inch wall mounted TV that swivels so you have a good view if you’re on the couch or the king-size bed that is standard at Hyatt hotels. Instead of bland hotel programming, there was DirecTV so there was a good selection of channels, including some in HD.

The bed is the standard Hyatt bed and I was quick to sleep. However, I woke up a couple of hours later with a very irritated upper body. I was quite itchy. I got up to look in the mirror and my chest and arms were bright red. I’m pretty sure that I was allergic to the laundry detergent they use and it wasn’t bed bugs. The rash went away after a few hours of sitting on the couch where I ended up sleeping for the next couple of hours.

The bathroom was on the small side, but had a very modern look to it. Instead of a normal door, there is an opaque sliding door. The shower head was above my head. I thought it was nice since I hate showers with shower heads that are no higher than my shoulders, which is fairly common since I’m over 6-feet tall. However, I was quick to find out when I took a shower that there was barely any water pressure. I was on the 4th floor and some reviews I have read have mentioned that the 4th and 5th (highest) floor have poor water pressure. I truly find that odd since it’s such a new hotel.

As I mentioned, on the Hyatt Place’s web site, it says there’s a complimentary continental breakfast buffet. In fact, it even says “New complimentary a.m. Kitchen Skillet™, featuring freshly prepared breakfast sandwiches, waffles, French toast, pancakes and steel cut oatmeal, is available daily in our Guest Kitchen”. Makes breakfast sound almost exciting, right? I went down to eat at about 8:45 and wondered where the waffles, pancakes, and French toast were. All I found were what they called “breakfast sandwiches”. Let’s be real, they should have advertized Egg McMuffins from McDonalds. I take that back… I would have preferred an Egg McMuffin. Let me try to describe what was served…picture in your mind an Egg McMuffin, then take off the top piece of English muffin, then cut it in half. I would have preferred eating at McDonalds. At least then I could have gotten whole Egg McMuffin and hash browns. The only excuse I could think of for this was that they make one batch of pancakes, waffles, and French toast and you have to get there at 7 to have a chance of getting some.

The service, however, was quite good. All of the staff of whom I interacted with were friendly and helpful. In fact, I forgot an item in my room of which I informed them of the same day I left. I received a daily call to give me the status – though the item has not been found.

Overall Impressions
Location: 3/5 – there isn’t much around the hotel. It is near a Metro stop so you can experience LA’s public transit. And it is close enough to LAX to be considered an airport hotel which has free parking and a free airport shuttle.
Comfort: 4/5 – would have been a 5 if there was decent water pressure in the shower
Cleanliness: 3/5 – I would give it was 4.5 if I didn’t wake up at 3AM with a rash. This was one of the few hotels at which I’ve stayed that I felt like I could walk around the room bare foot.

Overall, I’d be hard pressed to stay here again or recommend the Hyatt Place El Segundo to someone else. Even though I didn’t expect a lot, I feel like it really fell short of what I did expect.
