Hotel Review: Hyatt the Pike

As I said I might do in a previous post, my curiosity definitely got the better of me about staying at Hyatt the Pike and I must say I definitely enjoyed staying there. Unfortunately, it was only for one night. Curiosity was not the only reason I stayed there, though the other reasons do not pertain to this topic. I booked a room for about $200+tax on a Saturday night for a Grand King room.

I did a drive-by (not a shooting!) of the hotel earlier in the day as I was going to park in the parking structure for the hotel anyway. Note that it is not a Hyatt-ran parking structure, so no Hyatt GP points are earned for parking. The walk from the parking structure was shorter than some walks I have taken at other hotels from a hotel-owned lot. I could tell that the hotel was already crowded but check in was not for another 3-4 hours. Later in the day, I walked in the lobby at about 5:15 and had to wait for a clerk to help me; however I was first in line and the wait was minimal, even though they were at full capacity. The front desk clerk was very nice. There were no hiccups with my reservation and off I went to my room… on the second floor.

The room I got could not have been farther from the elevator, but I was very surprised when I entered the room. The pictures that I had seen from Hyatt’s website, I thought were for a suite. I thought wrong. As you walk in, there’s a mini-bar and built-in desk/work area to the immediate right. Straight ahead there’s a couch and coffee table. Then there’s the TV that is in the middle of the room, that swivels so you can either watch it sitting on the couch or laying in bed. The bed, by the way, is one of the most comfortable beds I have ever slept in (hotel or otherwise). Most of this is seen below in the picture.

Off to the right of the bed is the bathroom with a sliding door. The bathroom is all marble with a walk-in waterfall shower. There is no tub but there is enough room in the shower for more than one person. The toiletries were the white ginger scented shampoo and conditioner, and Aquafresh toothpaste. And I can’t say I liked the scent more than other people I have heard talk about it. Waterfall showers are nice to relax in, but I find that they just make the water fall and it doesn’t seem like there’s any pressure which I enjoy when showering.

There is a bar in the lobby which had a good selection of beers, wines and spirits. They even said that I was welcome to take it to my room without me inquiring about it. There is also a restaurant that has a “better than coffee shop” feel to it, but I didn’t eat there as I had other plans for Sunday brunch.

Overall Impressions
Location – 5/5 – simply cannot be beat. There are plenty of restaurants, shops and activities well within walking distance.
Comfort – 4/5 – even though the bed was extremely comfortable, I found the couch to be less than desirable. It wasn’t very soft and had a somewhat rough, not-quite-burlap, feel to it. The towels were also very soft.
Cleanliness – 4.5/5 – everything was clean, I didn’t notice anything that I felt should have been cleaner. Except for one minor thing… the wood/bamboo bench in the shower had a soap stain on it. It looks like a previous guest put the bar soap on the bench. I know I am nitpicking this a bit.

Overall, this hotel is a tremendous value especially for reward redemptions, as a Category 3 hotel, using only 12,000 points. Though the nearby Hyatt Regency is also Category 3. So it just depends on what amenities and type of hotel you want. Hyatt the Pike has a very boutique feel to it and if I had a need to stay in Long Beach again, I would gladly choose this hotel.
