As I reported last week, Delta announced a double mile promotion on several key Alaska Airlines routes. Today, Alaska Airlines fired back with a similar promotion – this time earning elite qualifying miles (EQMs). On flights between Seattle and Las Vegas (LAS)/Los Angeles (LAX)/Oakland (OAK)/San Francisco (SFO)/San Jose (SJC)/Santa Rosa (STS), you can earn double elite miles on flights from October22, 2013 through May 31, 2014. You have to register for the promotion and bonus elite miles will post 6-8 weeks after travel (according to the promotion page).
Although this promotion doesn’t last as long as the Delta promotion, I do think this is a better deal. Personally, I value EQMs more than redeemable miles. Depending on your travel habits, you may not. This is one of the numerous ‘shots across the bow’ between Alaska and Delta. While I don’t think that it would favor the consumer if the partnership ended, we can certainly reap the benefits in the meantime. I almost cannot wait to see what else will come out of this.
